Luxury Vinyl Flooring - LVT & Vinyl Plank Flooring

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) Vs. Laminate Flooring

Luxury Vinyl flooring in the flooring industry is constantly changing, we receive many questions and complaints about laminate flooring. Through the last decade, laminates have changed tremendously, from the old glued together floating floor, which provided messy glue joints, but provided highly moisture resistant seams. To the current snap and lock together, which is easier to install, but not as moisture resistant and lower quality MDF laminate core boards. Moisture and standing water from snowy or wet shoes, to the dogs water bowl has cause many issues, cause the laminate to swell, leaving an eye soar at the seams.

As laminates go in the market, most consumers are looking at cost, not quality, which drives the market. So manufacturers have cut quality to meet consumer’s expectation for cost. We have even seen this is in higher quality laminate flooring too. As a flooring professional, I steer consumers away from laminates for these reasons:

Laminate flooring is easy to install, but moisture or humidity highly can easily affect the product if not controlled, as many customers do not know how to control there relative humidity. The Core of a laminate acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture causing it to expand. If there is not enough expansion in a room, the floor will buckle, or the joints of the laminate will squeak as you walk across it. The biggest issue is when water is repeatedly applied to the seams, they swell and lift, causing one ugly looking floor and permanent damage.

Now why not use a LVT or Luxury Vinyl Tile or Plank? What is LVT? Think of a crossover SUV, we have the luxury of all wheel drive, but better gas mileage and comfort. An LVT is a heavy duty vinyl floor, done in individual tiles or planks. Think of it as a laminate floor without the major issues that water and moisture cause.

LVT products are made of Highly Moisture Resistant PVC or Virgin Vinyl. Providing a floor that is easy to maintain and clean, highly durable to large pets and heavily used homes, and easy to install. An LVT can be fully glued down, or installed with glue less self-locking edge just like a laminate.
